How can you tell if blueberries are fresh?

Look for a dusty silver-gray bloom and berries that are firm and dry in the box. Blueberries do not ripen after picking, so red or green shoulders stay tart forever. Here is the uncomfortable part, though: a blueberry turns fully blue several days before it is actually sweet, and shipping growers pick at first full blue because the fruit travels better. Nothing you can see tells you which one you have.

What to check

Lookeven deep blue with a powdery bloom. That bloom is the fruit's own natural wax, and because it rubs off on contact, bloom-free shiny patches mean handled berries rather than clean ones.
Feelfirm and dry. Wrinkled berries are drying out, soft ones are on the way out.
Check the boxturn it over. Stains or damp on the base mean crushed fruit underneath, and that is where mold starts.
Buying for whensince the in-store cues cannot tell you about sugar, season does the work instead. North American peak is roughly June through August, and mid-summer local fruit is where the flavor is. Winter berries from Peru and Chile are selected for shipping firmness above all, so they look immaculate and often taste of very little.
Common mistaketaking the box from the top of the pile. Those have sat longest under the case lights. Tilt one on its side first: fresh, dry berries roll and shift freely, while berries stuck together in a clump are damp underneath and will mold within days.

If they are not perfect: sour blueberries never improve, so do not leave them on the counter hoping. Cook them, where the acid actually helps, in muffins or a compote. They also freeze better than any other berry thanks to that waxy skin, so freeze the box rather than losing it.

You just read the cue for one piece. RIPE reads a photo of the entire display, draws numbered rings on the ones worth taking, and tells you why in the same plain words these guides use. Then it remembers what you brought home and nudges you before it turns.

It claims only what a camera can actually see. Every verdict ends by handing the last check back to your hands, which is the part these guides just taught you.
